Nike Oshinowo Soleye and Damilola Agbajor

Sitting beside one of the world’s most striking beauties is an experience that requires some processing. She is graceful and straight-backed. Her head is always held high, yet she is assessable. Her photogenic beauty is so mesmerizing in real life it makes you gaze and gaze. She is one of those people born to be in front of the camera, a woman who can hypnotize people just by sitting and breathing. But she is much more than beauty: she is brains too, and she is a very serious business woman who is result driven and a great source of inspiration. Nike Oshinowo Soleye, the beauty queen turned Queen Mother has focused Nigeria’s, and indeed the world’s, attention on her beauty cause, the Miss Nigeria pageant. Not to be confused with the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria (MBGN) contest, the Miss Nigeria pageant is Nigeria’s official pageant, started in 1957. Winners of the pageant are ambassadors of Nigerian culture, and appropriately, the contest does not feature a swimsuit segment. After a six-year hiatus, Nigeria’s flagship beauty pageant returned better than most people envisaged under the able leadership of Mrs Soleye, who is seen as a mentor by new queens.

This year, her protégé is none other than Damilola Agbajor, an eighteen year old undergraduate student of Mass Communication in the University of Lagos. Quite reserved for a beauty queen, Damilola can be outspoken when she wants to. She still nurtures dreams of becoming a broadcaster and seems to have a strong faith in her country. Call her the prefect Miss Nigeria and you would be perfectly right.

In the spirit of royal weddings and everything grand, we cross a generational divide and present to you Nigeria’s very own royalty in the world of beauty. Nike speaks about the process of the rebirth of the pageant, her signature perfume and her beauty secrets, while Damilola takes us on a journey through her participation in  the pageant, her dreams and responsibilities.
