Nothing beats having amazing skin: Makeup goes on nicer and you don’t have to gloop it on. We are all on the quest to get smooth, bright and healthy skin. This journey can sometimes be costly and yield absolutely no results despite the gaping holes in our finances. One has to be in the know about what to avoid and what to stock up on. Whatever route you decide to go, here are a few key ingredients to look out for in brightening skincare.

1.Enzymes and Fruit Acids- these will exfoliate dead layers of skin and lighten. Safe to use once In a while.
2.Kojic Acid- since its discovery twenty years ago, kojic acid products have taken the skincare industry by storm. It’s an alternative that’s natural yet still very effective. This mushroom extract is great for solving pigmentation problems, spots, freckles , melasma. It is also derived from the fermentation of malting rice during the process of making SAKE (Japanese rice wine).
3.Alpha Arbutin- works effectively on all skin types. Quite expensive to manufacture, it works fast even at low concentrations.
4.Bearberry Extract (Beta-Arbutin) –it is often referred to as just arbutin. It is a natural extract found in the Uva Ursi plant. Though a natural derivative of Hydroquinone, it does not possess the same side effects. Though cheaper to manufacture than arbutin, the skin lightening effect is much less than that of its counterpart. For this reason most new whitening products manufacturers prefer to use Alpha Arbutin as opposed to Beta Arbutin.
5.Licorice extract- inhibits pigmentation in skin by preventing tyrosinase activation. Studies have shown that it can provide a considerable skin brightening effect while remaining non toxic to melanin forming cells.
6.Mulberry extract: Obtained from the root of Broussonetia Kazinoki, it is a good inhibitor of tyrosinase enzyme. It is mild and safe for most skins as it does not irritate.
7.Glycolic Acid- is an AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acid) which promotes exfoliation and a natural brightening of the skin. It increases cell turnover and also helps to minimize fine lines and wrinkles. It is useful as a pre treatment because it will remove old dead cells allowing serums and treatment lotions to penetrate farther into the skin.
8.Lactic Acid- it mimics the properties of glycolic acid but is safer for sensitive skins.
9.Lemon Juice-one of nature’s most potent lightening agents, unfortunately it can be very irritating. It should only be used in small concentrations. It can be very drying if applied directly so make sure to dilute if used. Safe to use on elbows, knees, knuckles.
10.Vitamin C-a natural anti oxidant that occurs in many different forms. When applied topically or ingested it helps cell turnover especially when coupled with exfoliation. So whip out the 1000mg Vit C with Rose hips! (another good reason to pop those Vitamins!)
Of all these, whatever skincare ingredient you are drawn to, please make sure to consult a skincare expert . Various skin types react to products differently so what works for someone else may not yield exactly the same results for you. Once Skin is bright and smooth, follow these simple steps when applying makeup.
1.Start with shine control
2.Use foundation on areas needed only.
3.Use a brightening powder- Iman second to none luminous foundation
4.Set makeup with an oil blotting powder.
5.Go bright on lips(reds, fuscia, orange) or keep things pale and nude (brown, peach, pink, mauve)
Total Strangers will stop you and ask what you are using. Only you (and I) will know how you have transformed your skin based on your knowledge of skincare product ingredients and a little bit of makeup!
—Get ready to reveal and revamp your skin using new discoveries in skincare
