ASOS Resumes Taking Orders After Warehouse Fire

Online fashion retailer ASOS has restarted taking orders this morning after a fire at its main warehouse on Friday led to a suspension over the weekend.

Reuters reports that the retailer started taking orders in the early hours of this morning after 20 percent of the stock held at its distribution centre in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, had been compromised by fire damage and the sprinkler systems.

Fortunately, nobody was hurt in the fire, which was thought to have been started deliberately. The company has confirmed that it is fully insured for loss of stock and business interruption caused by the fire.

A company spokesman said there was little if any structural damage to the building, though police described the damage as substantial. With more than a half million square feet of space, the building serves as ASOS' primary warehouse, although the company has a secondary one for returns and one in the U.S., a spokesman said.

The warehouse is more than 60,000 square metres in size and contains over 10 million boxes of packaging. As of May 31, the business held £159 million of stock at cost, of which around 70 percent was held at its Barnsley Distribution Centre.

ASOS released the following statement: "We have been advised by the South Yorkshire Police that after initial investigations, they are treating the incident as deliberate and have commenced a criminal inquiry."

ASOS, which stands for As Seen on Screen was founded by Nick Robertson in 2000 with the unique selling point of copying clothes worn by celebrities.
